Notre Dame and Navy to play at New Meadowlands

It's still a year off, but the US Naval Academy announced this week that the 2010 Navy vs. Notre Dame Football game will be played at the New Meadowlands Stadium, home to the Jets and Giants starting after the upcoming 2009 season.

Jets President and CEO Woody Johnson said he is "thrilled that Navy and Notre Dame will be playing their annual game in our new stadium when it opens next year,” and that the new stadium was designed to not only "be our new home but also to bring a variety of spectacular events, including high profile college football matchups..."This is just the first of what we expect to be many announcements of non-NFL events at the stadium and it's a good thing too. The concerts will sell out at Giants Stadium, but old facilities and poor sound turn many would be attendees off. Hopefully that will change in 2010.

Izod Center is the third name given to the Meadowlands sports and entertainment arena.
The facility opened on July 2, 1981, as Brendan Byrne Arena, after the former Democratic governor. Rocker Bruce Springsteen was the performer, playing the first of six sold-out concerts.
The arena, which opened five years after The Meadowlands Racetrack and Giants Stadium, cost $85 million to build.
Its first major sports tenant was the Nets, who have played at the arena since moving from the Rutgers Athletic Center in the fall of 1981.
The Devils moved in a year later, arriving from Colorado. The Devils played at the arena until last year, when the franchise moved to Newark's Prudential Center.
Seton Hall University, which began playing basketball at the Meadowlands in 1985, also moved to Newark last year.
The arena was renamed Continental Airlines Arena in January 1996, with a naming-rights deal worth a reported $29 million during a span of 12 years.
Last October, the Izod brand of the Phillips-Van Heusen company replaced Continental with a five-year, $7 million deal.
Other past pro sports tenants at the Meadowlands arena include:
* Major Indoor Soccer League's Rockets (1981-82)
* Cosmos, North American Soccer League, in 1981-82 and 1983-84; and Major Indoor Soccer League, 1984-85
* Box Lacrosse League's Saints (1987-88)
* Roller Hockey International's Rockin Rollers (1994-97)
* Arena Football League's Red Dogs (1997-2000) and Gladiators (2001-03);
* The Jayson Williams-owned Storm of Major League Lacrosse (2001-03);
* The Xtreme of the National Indoor Football League (which lasted for only one home game in 2005).

On October 18, STAR 99.1 radio will bring together a line-up of contemporary Christian recording artists to the IZOD Center at the Meadowlands to raise support for Hurricane Ike disaster relief. “Rebuild: A Concert for Hurricane Ike Relief” will feature the Nashville-based band Salvador as well as New Jersey-based bands Runaway and Article A.

“This night is all about demonstrating the power of community to help our neighbors in need,” says STAR 99.1 Station Manager Scott Taylor.

A portion of every ticket sold will be sent to support disaster recovery. In addition, concert attendees will be encouraged to bring retail gift cards that will be distributed to meet the need in the Galveston – Houston region devastated by Hurricane Ike earlier this month.

Direct Bus Service from Port Authority Bus Terminal to Meadowlands Sports Complex Restored for Giants/Jets Football Games In an effort to give football fans additional travel options, NJ TRANSIT today announced that it will restore direct bus service from the Port Authority Bus Terminal (PABT) for football games at Giants Stadium while continuing to operate the new rail/bus service via Secaucus Junction. Beginning Sunday, September 21, NJ TRANSIT will operate No. 351 direct bus service from the PABT to the Meadowlands Sports Complex for all Jets and Giants home football games. In addition, the new No. 353 rail/bus shuttle from Penn Station New York with connecting bus service at Secaucus Junction will also be available for football fans going to the Meadowlands – giving customers both rail and bus options for games this season. All other events at the Meadowlands Sports Complex – soccer games, horse racing, concerts, etc. – will be served by the No. 353 rail/bus service from Penn Station New York with connecting bus service at Secaucus Junction to the Meadowlands.
