White Knoll HS band to make special trip to New York

The White Knoll High band from Lexington, South Carolina, travels to New York City on March 26 through March 29. There the band will enjoy the honor of performing at Carnegie Hall on Thursday, March 27, 2008. In planning the trip, members of the band booster club realized a great opportunity to personally connect the 87 band students with the New York City Fire Department. The band will be staying at the newly renovated Sheraton Meadowlands Hotel & Conference Center in East Rutherford, NJ.

A special relationship already exists between the students and FDNY. The roots of this relationship date back to 1867 when New York firemen helped the fire department in Columbia, S.C., rebuild after the Civil War.

Following the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, White Knoll Middle, a feeder school for White Knoll High, spearheaded a fundraising campaign to purchase a fire truck for FDNY. Many of the band members making the trip to New York were students at either White Knoll Middle or its elementary feeder schools during this time.
With the help of individuals from across South Carolina and the nation, White Knoll Middle raised more than $500,000 in 2001. The money was used to purchase a fire truck and other equipment for Ladder 101 of FDNY.

The band students proudly remember selling buttons and shirts, holding car washes, sponsoring bake sales and participating in the many other activities to raise the money. Now the students, as a result of the band’s trip to New York City, have the opportunity to personally meet the firemen who benefited from the students’ generosity.
The trip also culminates a year during which the connection between the White Knoll community and FDNY helped to honor a graduate of White Knoll High who died serving his country in Iraq.

White Knoll High raised money to name the school’s stadium field house in honor of Joshua L. Torrence, a 2003 WKH graduate who was killed in Fallujah while serving in the United States Marine Corps. As part of this fundraising campaign, four New York City firefighters presented a key note address during a weekend-long celebration, held on November 2–3, 2007. During this celebration the school dedicated the field house and honored veterans and first responders.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Q. What is the ticket limit?A. Ticket limit is 8 per show with a maximum of 4 GA tickets per show.
Q. What is the seating on the field?A. The field will have both a General Admission (GA) section and Reserved Seating.
Q. Where is the seating chart?A. The seating chart for this event has been posted on this page and on ticketmaster.com. Please note that the 2 small section behind the GA section on the field are section 2A (next to section 2) and section 3A (next to section 3). Both these sections are reserved seating.
So that there is no confusion, this is not the same seating chart that was used for the 2003 shows at Giants Stadium. The sections on the field are numbered differently.
Q. Where is my seat located within a section?A. The best way to explain it is "Higher numbered seat is closer to higher numbered section." So, if you have seat 1 in section 111, you are on the aisle next to section 110 and seats 2, 3, 4, etc. will be going towards section 112. If you have seat 1 in section 222, you are on the aisle next to section 221 and seats 2, 3, 4, etc. will be going towards section 223. For field seating, same rule applies.
Q. Where is the stage located?A. The stage is in the west endzone (section 101 end.)

Starting when Henry Hudson arrived at New York Harbor; the Dutch set up trading posts at Manhattan and pig farms in what is today the Meadowlands. In recent years the spectacular views of the New York City skyline across the Hudson River – along with equally compelling tax advantages – inspired top financial services institutions to create Wall Street West in Jersey City – by itself the 8th largest downtown area in the country.
Minutes from Manhattan by bridge, tunnel, train and ferry, the Waterfront region also offers the most convenient ferry service to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island from Liberty State Park, which also is home to the world-renowned Liberty Science Center. Both Newark Liberty Airport and Teterboro Airport service the region accessible from an awesome highway network.
There is always a full calendar of world class spectacular events on the Waterfront and its adjacent region, the Meadowlands. The
Meadowlands Sports Complex, the leading multi-venue sports destination in the world hosts the NY Giants, NY Jets, NJ Nets, NJ Devils, and professional horse racing. The Hackensack River estuary extends from the Sports Complex to the Hudson River, boasting multiple viewing areas of the east coast's 2nd largest bird sanctuary, and presents a variety of outstanding eco-tourism activities.
Come and take advantage of the incredible location and spectacular NY skyline view at the Sheraton Meadowlands Hotel.

Welcome to the 11th century! Inside our European-style castle, you will experience the pageantry, horsemanship, chivalry and romance of the Middle Ages!
The Pre-Show
The journey back in time begins as visitors are greeted by King Alfonso and his daughter, Princess Esperanza. Guests receive a colored crown corresponding to their seating area and the Knight they will cheer throughout the show. The Master of Ceremonies soon orders the Trumpeters of the Realm to announce the opening of the Grand Ceremonial Arena. Guests proceed to their color-coded pavilion as the sumptuous feast begins.
The Feast
With clockwork precision, legions of serving wenches and serfs deliver four courses to hungry guests in minutes. The meal begins with savory garlic bread and a steaming hot vegetable soup ladled into pewter bowls. Then come roasted chicken, spare rib, a seasoned potato and pastry of the Castle. Two rounds of beverages are included with the feast. Cash bar service is also available throughout the show. To the special delight of the guests, the feast is served "medieval style" - without silverware, but with plenty of extra napkins!
A vegetarian option is available: A large Portabello Mushroom stuffed with rice & beans, Herb Roasted Potatos, Pita Chips, soft drink and a pastry for dessert. VEGETARIAN MEALS MUST BE REQUESTED IN ADVANCE ON THE ORDER FORM.
The Show
While the sumptuous feast is being served, the legend of a kingdom threatened by treachery but intimately strengthened by courage unfolds in the Grand Ceremonial Arena. The show has all the lance-splintering action and glorious pageantry guests look forward to with a whole new element - a Princess's love for a handsome, gallant Knight - and a riveting confrontation between a turncoat warrior and a surprise defender of the crown. Competition is heated as the six brave Knights of the Realm vie in a colorful tournament for the lead in the flag toss, ring pierce and javelin throw - games of skill designed to hone a Knight's abilities in battle.
When the last game of skill has been won, Squires prepare the Grand Ceremonial Arena for the Joust. As trumpets sound, Knights in full armor astride magnificent Andalusians charge at each other brandishing 10-foot lances, intent on unseating their opponents. Once unhorsed, the Knights continue their battles on foot employing all the authentic weaponry of the medieval era - the sword, axe, mace and bola - in their quest for victory. In a shower of sparks, the cacophony of metal against metal and the deadly glint of whirling bola, all contenders eventually fall until only one brave Knight is left sanding to claim the title of New Champion.
But deadly treachery in the King's trusted inner circle must first be quelled. As the plot unfolds with shocking twists and turns...truth, honor and love eventually triumph over evil, and peace is restored to the kingdom. An unexpected event in the final minutes of the show brings guests to their feet in a deafening wave of thunderous cheers. All the Knights return to the Arena for a final rousing salute to the crowd of more than 1,000 noble guests.
Highlights of the dramatic show include an original music score recorded by the world-renowned Prague Symphony Orchestra, exquisite period costuming and spectacular special events.
The Knight Club
After a legendary show, the adventure continues for guests who visit The Knight Club. With full bar service, lively music and a dance floor, it's the place where Knights and Royalty greet guests, sign autographs and pose for pictures. Authentic suits of armor, exquisitely detailed etched swords and shields and medieval murals and banners line the walls.

LUNAR NEW YEAR GETS A BOOST FROM SCOUTS
BY LESLIE CASIMIR DAILY NEWS STAFF WRITER
Saturday, February 5th 2000, 2:12AM

The Empire State Building will be drenched in red and gold lights this weekend in observance of the Chinese new year, the first time the honor has been bestowed on the Asian community.
All of New York has two Chinatown girl scout troops to thank for the visual celebration marking the lunar new year 4698.

"There's green for St. Paddy's Day, blue for Chanukah - all we asked was that we be recognized, too," said Carolyn Hom Chow, who leads Troops 3175 and 3197. "Asians are contributing to this city. We are just not down in Chinatown; we are all over."

Members of the two troops started a letter-writing campaign last month, said Lydia Ruth, who coordinates the lighting of the 102-story skyscraper.

The scouts' appeal was bolstered by a request from the Asian American Business Development Center.

In turns out no one had ever asked for the special lighting display for the Chinese new year. The building's management was pleased to oblige.

The colors of red and gold - representing luck and prosperity - lit up the top of the structure last night and will be turned on again tonight and tomorrow evening.

"I think it's nice that the Empire State Building is doing this," gushed Victoria Cheng, a fifth-grader at Public School 130.

"We gave them the suggestions for the colors, too."

Added Christine Tucker, 10, a junior girl scout and fifth-grader at PS 1: "I would never think that the people at the Empire State Building would respond to us - they are a busy building. We've sold cookies, made arts and crafts, but this is the biggest thing we ever accomplished."
Members of the girl scout troops, public officials and community leaders met yesterday to mark the new year and the building lighting and to call for further reductions in the cultural gap between the Asian immigrant and mainstream communities.

"We hope the new year is not just celebrated by Asians but the entire community," said John Wang, president of Wall Street-based AABDC. "We are part of New York's culture."

For the next two weeks, the city's Chinese, Korean and Vietnamese communities will celebrate the lunar new year with family visits, meals and holiday blessings.

There'll be parades of dancing dragons and lions throughout the city, too.

One such parade was held a day early. A 100-foot-long dragon - manipulated by the Jook Tong Long kung fu group - slivered through the Empire State Building yesterday.

The bamboo dragon, draped in silk, satin and papier-mache, chased a fuzzy pearl, providing a surprising spectacle for tourists.

"Only in New York can we come together and celebrate the diversity in this city," said Manhattan Borough President Virginia Fields. "It helps us to tell the world how we as a people can live together."
